Woodworking Project #1

Sketchup Project #2

á     Each student will use Sketchup to create a 3-D replication of some sort of woodworking project or you can create your own.

á     The following website has woodworking plans for you to choose from:

á     You will need to include a price list and a list of materials(Supply List).

á     To calculate board feet

á     "Board Feet" is a measurement of lumber volume. A board foot is equal to 144 cubic inches of wood. Actually it's easy to calculate using the following formula:

á     (Thickness x Width x Length) / 144 = Board Feet

á     Note: Lumber is specified by its rough size. This is why a 1"x 4" board is actually 3/4" thick and a 2"x 4" board is actually 1-1/2" thick.

á     When you are figuring up board feet, keep in mind a waste factor. If you purchase good clear material add about 15% for waste.

á     Determine the Number of Square Feet of Lumber Needed.

á     The number of square feet of a piece of lumber is calculated by multiplying the length of the piece (in inches) by the width of the piece (in inches) and dividing the product by 144.

á     Example: A board that's 4'' wide and 60'' long is:

á     (4 x 60) / 144 = 1.67 square feet.

á     Determine the Number of Tenths of a Square Foot (TSF) of Lumber Needed.

á     To calculate the cost of the lumber you order, you'll need to convert square feet into tenths of a square foot (TSF). This is just a matter of multiplying the number of square feet by 10 and rounding the number up to the nearest tenth of a square foot.

á     Example: The number of tenths of a square foot (TSF) in 1.67 square feet is:

á     1.67 x 10 = 16.7 TSF;

á     Rounded up to the nearest tenth of a square foot, thats:

á     17 TSF

á     Find the Cost of the Lumber

á      To find the total cost of the lumber, multiply the total number of tenths of a square foot (TSF) of lumber you plan to order by the price listed in the lumber offer.

á      Example: The cost of 17 tenths of a square foot (TSF) of lumber priced at $.35/TSF is:

á     17 x .35 = $5.95
